We are ecstatic to share that Western Crop Innovations is welcoming two new Research Associates to its scientific support teams in Pathology and Biotechnology. After undergoing more than six months of recruitment for various roles, our organization is thrilled to be starting the New Year with a fully staffed team!
Dr. Segun Babarinde will begin his new role as Research Associate — Pathology on December 9th. He holds a PhD in Plant Pathology from Dalhousie University, a MSc in Agricultural and Environmental Science (Plant Pathology) from Newcastle University, UK, and a BSc in Agriculture (Botany) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Prior to joining us, Dr. Babarinde worked as a Plant Diagnostic Pathologist with the BC Ministry of Agriculture.
“Segun Babarinde has several years of experience in plant pathology, with a strong research focus on pathogen identification, field trials, and crop disease management,” says WCI’s Pathology Lead, Dr. Sajid Rehman. “His addition to the pathology team will strengthen and diversify WCI’s research portfolio, and his fresh perspective and collaborative spirit will be a great fit with our team dynamics.”
Starting January 6th, Miss Aruna Prabha Abbadi will assume the role of Biotechnology Research Associate on a temporary basis while a colleague is on parental leave. Aruna joins us as a co-op student while working toward a Post-Graduate Diploma in Agriculture Management from Lambton College, ON. She already holds a BSc in Agricultural Science & Rural Development from Osmania University, India, and an MSc in Genetics and Plant Breeding from Lovely Professional University, India.
“Aruna already has a strong background in private-sector wheat, rice, and tomato breeding;” states Michael Holtz, WCI’s Sr. RA, Biotechnology. “Her passion for agriculture, high energy, and motivation shone through in our interviews. We’re confident the experience she brings will be a valuable asset to our team.”
WCI is committed to fostering fresh talent for the ag industry by providing hands-on opportunities that bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application. We look forward to Aruna’s contributions and growth during her time with us.
WCI looks forward to welcoming both Segun and Aruna to the team in the coming weeks. We are confident that their skills and expertise will contribute significantly to the continued success and growth of our pathology, biotechnology, and breeding programs!
