WCI Staff at PGDC, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Winnipeg, MB – February 27, 2025 – Western Crop Innovations (WCI) is pleased to announce that all five varieties put forward at the 2025 Prairie Grain Development Committee (PGDC) meetings have received support for registration.
The following new varieties will be available for commercialization, with bids opening next week:
- TR22669 – 2-row, semi-dwarf feed barley
- FB23618 – 2-row feed & forage barley
- T317 – Reduced-awn feed & forage spring triticale
- T318 – Reduced-awn feed & forage spring triticale
- WT0050 – Reduced-awn feed & forage winter triticale (our final winter release)
In addition, TR21665, a 2-row malting barley variety approved at the 2024 PGDC annual meeting, will also be available for commercialization. Notably, TR21665 is the only malting barley variety to receive support for registration in the past two years.
Another significant highlight from this year’s PGDC is the adoption of T318 as a new check variety by the Prairie Recommending Committee for Wheat, Rye, and Triticale, recognizing T318 as having significantly raised the bar for spring triticale.
“It is very unique for a brand new, unlicensed variety to be made a check,” says Erin Collier, Business Development Officer at WCI. “This is a real testament to T318’s outstanding performance.”
This sentiment was echoed by WCI’s Interim Executive Director, Mark Olson: “We are incredibly proud of this achievement, and I want to extend special congratulations to our triticale breeder, Mazen Aljarrah, and his team for their dedication to excellence.”
Olson continued, “The success of our varieties at PGDC this year is a reflection of the determination and expertise of the entire team at WCI. From breeding and field trials to data analysis and commercialization, their hard work has driven the success of not only T318, but all of our registered varieties.”
