Alberta Grains (“AG”) board of directors have voted to support Western Crop Innovations (“WCI”) with a $375,000 core funding donation for the balance of the current fiscal year (through March 31st, 2025). AG will also enter into discussions with WCI in regard to a longer-term funding agreement.
Commented Mark Olson, WCI’s Interim Executive Director, “I know that Alberta Grains has been watching this transition closely. They wanted to get behind a new plan for the former FCDC, embrace a new vision that would take research to the farm in a meaningful way. The fact they have stepped up to support WCI at this level is incredibly encouraging and so appreciated. We are expecting that the level of investment from this major funding partner will likely enhance further commitments from other organizations striving to build crop research capacity in Western Canada.”
“This investment in Western Crop Innovations reflects Alberta Grains’ commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural practices right here in Alberta and enhancing productivity for Alberta farmers,” said Michael Flynn, Alberta Grains’ Executive Director. “By collaborating with WCI, we are accelerating the development of innovative crop varieties and breeding technology that address the evolving needs of our agriculture sector.”
The Honorable R.J. Sigurdson, Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, added:
“Alberta Grains funding is good news for both WCI and Alberta’s farmers. Together, the Government of Alberta and industry are proud funders and committed partners in this valuable work. Funding like this ensures stability for the long run. It is encouraging to see multiple industry groups come together to revitalize this crucial agricultural capacity and benefit the future of Alberta’s ag sector.”
